A Musing Bean

Why The Apple TV Isn't Coming Soon

I happened to re-watch Steve Job's appearance at the D10 conference. The last audience question was on TV. Steve's response clearly explains why nobody can crack the TV problem.

The problem is there's no viable go to market strategy. Since people are already accustomed to getting over-the-air TV for free or next-to-nothing. We aren't willing to pay for yet another set-top box. The second problem is that carriers and TV standards are highly fragmented, both in the US and across the world. This was the state in 2010, and it hasn't changed very much since then.

Perhaps the path is to make the TV set-top-box "free" as an addition to another product, such as the XBOX with gaming. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that Apple has something along these lines ready to go.
