A Musing Bean

More Elop in the News

Bloomberg posted an intriguing article today about what Stephen Elop would do as CEO:

“Besides emphasizing Office, Elop would be prepared to sell or shut down major businesses to sharpen the company’s focus, the people said. He would consider ending Microsoft’s costly effort to take on Google with its Bing search engine, and would also consider selling healthy businesses such as the Xbox game console…" -- Bloomberg

You can draw all manner of conspiracy theories around this. There may be nothing to it: Stephen Elop was the former President of the Microsoft Office Division. Ask any “insider” what they think he might do as CEO, and this would be it.

Still, it's quite likely this is a deliberate leak, in order to assess the market reaction. MSFT was up 0.75% today. It seems that investors would not object to selling off unprofitable divisions to double down on the Enterprise.
