A Musing Bean

Google Woes

Ever since I started using Google many many years ago, it has been the epitome of a rock solid service. That is, until recently.

I've begun to notice slower search results. Often, when navigating back from a result, the results are completely blank. I have to hit refresh a couple times for them to re-appear. Sometimes they don’t.

Just today, I noticed something very strange about hitting the arrow keys in the search bar. Single taps don't register, but holding the key down works. At first I thought my keyboard was dying, or something was wrong with FireFox. But the same thing happens on Safari, and on multiple computers. The keys work fine on other sites and Apps.

Barring spyware, my guess is that Google is trying to do something smart with handling arrow navigation. Somehow, something was missed in testing.

It's pretty clear that there has been a shift in priorities at Google. Maybe it has to do with Marissa Mayer’s departure, maybe it's something else. Bottom line is that someone has taken their eyes off the wheel, and that can be a dangerous thing.

For the first time in forever, I actually visited Bing to run a couple searches.

That says quite a lot.
